Force and Motion
Key Topics and Vocabulary
force - A force is a push or pull. A force has both size and direction.
friction - Friction is the force that resists the movement of one surface past another. (sliding friction, rolling friction, and static friction)
gravitational force - Gravitational force is the force of attraction between any object and every other object in the universe.
speed - Speed is a measure of how fast an object is moving.
velocity - Velocity is the speed of an object in a particular direction.
acceleration - Acceleration is the rate at which velocity changes.
inertia - Inertia is the tendency of an object to remain at rest or in constant motion unless a force acts on it.
momentum - Momentum is a measure of the force needed to stop a moving object
Newton’s First Law of Motion - An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion at constant speed and in a straight line, unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
Newton's Second Law of Motion - The acceleration of an object depends on the mass ofthe object and the size of the net force applied. (acceleration = force ÷ mass)
Newton’s Third Law of Motion - When a force is applied to an object, the object exerts an equal force in the opposite direction.
